Designers and manufacturers of LED components are always finding ways to reduce the size of supporting technology. Of course, there are times when the desire to minimise size results in reduced functionality, which can lead to poor-performing lighting. This is obviously a case of going too far. Function should never be compromised and form should not necessarily follow function; rather, it should be used to co-create a product. The team at OSRAM knows that a balance needs to be struck between the ideal and the practical. As designers of modern lighting systems, OSRAM would relish the ability to reduce physical dimensions to the near invisible. However, this remains impossible as light has to come from somewhere. The dictates of modern design – as with most innovations and inventions – require technology to be integrated from the beginning. The long-held maxim, ‘form follows function’ has stood designers in good stead for the past century or so.
In a modern world, technology now needs to guide the design process and be an indispensable aspect of a device’s function. That is why digital components play such a big role in OSRAM’s new products and design strategies.
Designing compact lights
The job that light designers perform has become more complex. In the past, components were simple, designs lacked a transformer and there was no need for a control gear or driver. Technology and design are always evolving; their relationship continues to grow more intimate and so does the subtlety of their appearance.
Now, miniaturisation, outstanding light quality and high flexibility can be achieved with the new OPTOTRONIC FIT LT2 S LED driver and the Zhaga-approved PrevaLED Core Z6 Mini LED module, which provide lighting manufacturers and planners with innovative features that aid the design of compact luminaires.
For hoteliers who want to develop more compact spotlights and downlights, without sacrificing light quality, OSRAM’s new OPTOTRONIC FIT LT2 S LED driver range and the matching PrevaLED Core Z6 Mini LED module deliver packages that are low maintenance and durable. As a result, they can create the luminaires of tomorrow.
The perfectly tailored system, which comprises drivers and modules, offers excellent performance and flexibility. This makes it ideal for lighting shops, hotels, living areas and office buildings. At the same time, OSRAM’s OPTOTRONIC FIT LT2 S LED driver is compatible with many chips on board and LED modules, while the smaller light-emitting surface of OSRAM’s PrevaLED Core Z6 Mini allows more compact reflectors, without changing the light characteristics of the spotlight. All of this enables customers to design compact light fixtures that do not compromise when it comes to quality. Digital lighting components would be optimal with zero dimensions, yet the need for reliable and secure equipment renders this impossible. OSRAM’s latest compact solutions for LED product designers – the OPTOTRONIC FIT LT2 S driver family and the PrevaLED Core Z6 Mini LED module for spot and downlights – are committed to being reliable and secure, in conjunction with pushing the boundaries of design to meet the ideal standard.
The OPTOTRONIC FIT LT2 S is a constant-current driver that allows multiple lumen packages, so there is no need to design different packages for varying power ratings. The 15, 25 and 40W drivers all have the same form factor, and at 97.0×43.0×29.5mm, OSRAM is confident with its very impressive form factor.
Small but mighty
An additional feature of the small device is the ability to adjust the output current by connecting an external resistor. This gives a driver output current range of 150-1,050mA, depending on the combination of driver rating and resistor.
The second innovation is the PrevaLED Core Z6 Mini LED module that has a design that takes miniaturisation to a new level. It has been created to operate with the range of OSRAM drivers – including the OPTOTRONIC FIT LT2 S LED driver – and the size of the PrevaLED Core Z6 Mini means smaller and shorter reflector systems that can be employed without changing the light performance.
The PrevaLED Core Z6 Mini has a 13mm diameter lightemitting surface in a 35mm diameter mount. These compact dimensions are proof of OSRAM’s continued effort to simplify the tasks that are undertaken by product designers.
Its performance shines brightly too. The PrevaLED Core Z6 Mini operates at a maximum of 3,450lm output and has a lifetime of 60,000 hours. The LED module is available with an Ra_80 for colour temperatures of 2,700, 3,000, 3,500 and 4,000K, as well as Ra_90 for 3,000 and 4,000K outputs.
Big performance in discreet packages is what makes OSRAM’s new compact solutions the modern lighting systems of choice. With subtlety, sophistication and plenty of power, these are the essential lighting choices that the hospitality sector demands. Additionally, these latest developments enhance the product designer’s toolbox by enabling them to focus on aesthetics and performance, or to stay with the company’s opening maxim, form and function. So, technology does not hamper creativity, it helps it.
